After the third game of the 1997 season, Tennessee was desperately looking for something to take the pressure off Peyton Manning's right arm. The Vols had just embarrassingly lost to Florida for the fifth-straight year, gaining an anemic 45 yards on the ground. Head Coach Phillip Fulmer entered the bye week before their next game vs. Ole Miss with two main objectives:

  1. Keep the team focused
  2. Find a damn running game
