Bulletpoints: Iowa

Thoughts on Ohio State's 31-14 win at Iowa.

Bulletpoints: Iowa

  • This is Jeremiah Smith's Cam Newton season. Feeding him as much as possible gives Ohio State its best chance to win each week, and I really do believe that he can carry them to at least a deep playoff run -if not a national title. Iowa tried just about everything possible they could to try and stop him, to no avail. What the hell are you supposed to do against a guy who makes this catch, then takes it an extra 40 yards:

Obviously, it can't all just be Smith. Other guys have to make plays when they're called on. That's exactly what they did against Iowa. Devin McCuin feels like he's finally starting to find his place in the offense. His TD on the opening drive was a great sign of the developing chemistry between him and Julian Sayin, and he had a couple of other nice plays to finish with 80 yards on four catches. Brandon Inniss and Nate Roberts converted two third downs on their three combined catches. The running backs –as incapable of generating big plays as they are– at least consistently churned out some tough yardage against Iowa's defense. I'd love for the offense to be at its best with a mix of weapons defenses have to fear so they can't solely key in on stopping No. 4. That isn't the reality with this offense, though. What is reality is that he's one of the best receivers to ever play college football, and he's in the midst of what might be an all-time season. He can still go off in a major way even when defenses focus on limiting him. If his supporting cast can just make plays when they're called on, this team has as good a shot as anyone at winning it all.

  • This was the best game of Julian Sayin's career so far. He seemed as confident as he ever has operating the offense, and in trusting what he saw. The fact that he kept working the middle of the field –something that's been a legitimate knock on his game– against a strong Iowa defense shows his progression. I loved him evading the rusher, then stepping up and hitting Smith on their third quarter TD:
